What happens during a hearing assessment at Simply Hearing?

At Simply Hearing, our hearing assessments include an in-depth consultation with Meharban as opposed to free hearing tests offered by the high street hearing aid providers.

Consultation – A patient history will be taken including questions about general health and lifestyle and your concerns about your hearing will be addressed.

Otoscopy – Examination of the external ear and eardrum by video otoscopy which allows you to see your ear clearly displayed on a screen.

Full Diagnostic Hearing Test – In a sound proof booth this includes Pure tone Audiometry with air and bone conduction (with masking if applicable) and loudness discomfort test which determine your tolerance to sounds. Speech testing which determines your ability to hear and understand speech with and without background noise.

Tympanometry – Measures the middle ear status and function. This allows us to determine pressure and any congestion/fluid in the middle ear and confirms if the ear drum is intact or if a perforation is present.
Thorough discussion of the test results – After a full diagnostic assessment, you will be shown your results and the condition of your hearing will be explained in depth. If Hearing Aids are proven to be helpful to you, we will put together a bespoke treatment plan for you. As we are an independent audiology practice, we have a wide range of premium hearing aids available and will take into consideration the right technology level, style of hearing aid and budget when helping to choose the right hearing solution to suit you.

Speech in-Noise - This is a test which provides valuable information about a persons ability to hear in the presence of background noise. During the test you will hear a series of sentences with increasing background noise which you will be required to repeat back what you hear. A score will be used to determine your ability to recognise speech.

TENS Test - Threshold Equalising Noise (TEN) testing is used to identify Dead Regions (DRs) of the cochlea. We need to identify Dead Regions because the presence of a DR can impact speech discrimination, especially where hearing aid amplification occurs within a DR, distortion can reduce speech intelligibility. Identification of a DR is important for effective hearing aid fitting and modification of hearing aid prescription.

We offer a very basic 3 Point Hearing Screening free of charge which gives an indiction on whether you have a hearing loss.
For a more in-depth Full Diagnostic Hearing Test there is a charge. Please contact us for further information.
